What is “The Spark?”

The spark is your child’s authentic curiosity and and natural interest that emerges from within them. It’s not what you think they should be interested in, but what genuinely captivates their attention, drives their questions, and fuels their imagination.

 

Remember: Every child has unique sparks. Your job is to notice, nurture, and celebrate them.

 

What to Look For: The 6 Spark Indicators 

  1. The Question Flood 

They ask endless ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions about a specific topic 

  • Example: “Why do birds have different colored feathers? How do they know where to fly? Do baby birds dream?” 

 

  1. Time Disappears 

They lose track of time when engaged with certain activities 

  • Example: Playing with blocks for hours, completely absorbed in building 

 

  1. Self-Directed Learning 

They seek out books, videos, or information on their own 

  • Example: Always choosing dinosaur books at the library, asking to watch nature documentaries 

 

  1. Creative Connections 

They relate everything back to their interest area 

  • Example: “This traffic jam is like when ants have to go around obstacles!” 

 

  1. Persistent Return 

They keep coming back to the same themes in play or conversation 

  • Example: Every drawing includes horses, every story features animals 

 

  1. Emotional Investment 

They show strong feelings (excitement, frustration, joy) about the topic 

  • Example: Getting genuinely upset when their tower falls, or jumping with joy when they solve a puzzle

Instructions: Each day, jot down any spark indicators you notice. Don't worry about filling out every section - just capture what you observe naturally.
