Language Reframe Quick-Reference Card

Keep this card handy during reading time for instant phrase swaps!

Instead of saying… ❌ Try saying… ✅
“You should know this by now.” “You’re still figuring it out — that’s how learning works.”
“We’ve done this a hundred times.” “This is a tricky one! Let’s try it a new way together.”
“Stop guessing!” “Let’s slow down and look for clues in the word.”
“You’re not paying attention.” “It looks like your brain needs a quick break — let’s wiggle.”
“That was wrong.” “Good try — you found part of it! Let’s look at the next sound.”
“Why can’t you remember this?” “Hmm, what clue could help us with this word?”
“You’re not trying hard enough.” “I can see you’re working hard. What feels tricky right now?”
“Just sound it out!” “Let’s look at each sound together. What’s the first one?”
💡 The Golden Rule: Swap “Why” questions for “What” or “How” questions!

  • Instead of: “Why did you say that?” → Try: “What clue could we use here?”
  • Instead of: “Why aren’t you paying attention?” → Try: “What would help you focus right now?”
✨ Process Praise Starters:

  • “I saw you…”
  • “I loved how you…”
  • “You used a great strategy when you…”
  • “I noticed you stuck with it even when…”
