๐Ÿ” SEARCH STRATEGIES BY PLATFORM

At the Library:

What to say to the librarian:

  • “My child loves [topic]. What do you recommend for a [age]-year-old [reader level]?”

  • “We loved [specific book]. What else is like that?”

  • “My child is obsessed with [topic] but hates fiction. Do you have non-fiction options?”

  • “What’s popular with kids this age right now?”

Don’t be shy! Librarians LOVE these questions.

Online Searches:

Google search formulas:

  • “[Topic] picture books”

  • “[Topic] early readers”

  • “[Topic] chapter books for age [X]”

  • “Books like [favorite book title]”

  • “Best [topic] books for kids”

Example: “space picture books” or “books like Magic Tree House”

Goodreads:

  1. Search for a book your child loved

  2. Scroll to “Readers also enjoyed” section

  3. Find similar books instantly

Or: Search “[topic] books for children” in Goodreads search

Amazon:

  1. Find a book your child loved

  2. Scroll to “Customers who bought this item also bought”

  3. Discover similar books

Or: Search “children’s books about [topic]”

๐Ÿ“Š MATCHING DIFFICULTY TO INTEREST

The Golden Rule:

High interest = Can read harder
Low interest = Keep it easy

If Interest Level is HIGH:

โœ… Offer books slightly above their comfortable reading level
โœ… Motivation will pull them through challenging words
โœ… Vocabulary builds naturally because they WANT to understand

Example: Child reads at Level J but is OBSESSED with space. Try Level L-M space books. They’ll push through because they care.

If Interest Level is MEDIUM:

โœ… Stay at their comfortable reading level
โœ… Don’t add difficulty on top of lukewarm interest

Example: Child reads at Level J and likes (but doesn’t love) fairy tales. Stick with Level J fairy tales.

If Interest Level is LOW:

โœ… Go EASIER than their reading level
โœ… If forced to read it (school requirement), reduce skill barrier

Example: Child reads at Level J but dislikes historical fiction. If required, find Level H-I historical fiction.

๐Ÿ“š WHEN TO TRY SERIES

Why Series Work:

โœ… Remove decision fatigue (child knows what’s next)
โœ… Build confidence (familiar characters, style)
โœ… Create momentum (child wants to know what happens!)
โœ… Feel like friends, not new books

Popular Series by Reading Level:

Beginning Readers (Levels C-I):

  • Biscuit

  • Pete the Cat

  • Elephant and Piggie

  • Fly Guy

Early Chapter Books (Levels J-M):

  • Magic Tree House

  • Junie B. Jones

  • Ivy + Bean

  • Dragon Masters

Middle Grade (Levels M-S):

  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid

  • Percy Jackson

  • Wings of Fire

  • Warriors

๐Ÿ’ก TROUBLESHOOTING

“My child’s interest isn’t on this list!”

What to do:

  1. Identify the broader category (Example: “Monster trucks” โ†’ Vehicles)

  2. Search: “[specific interest] + children’s books”

  3. Ask your librarianโ€”they’ll find it!

  4. Look for adjacent interests (Example: Loves Minecraft โ†’ Try building/creating books)

“My child has NO interests!”

Possible reasons:

  • They’re young (under 3) and still exploring

  • They’re in transition between interests

  • You need more observation time

What to try:

  • Offer variety (animals, vehicles, fantasy, humor)

  • Watch for engagement cues

  • Try non-fiction (often surprises parents!)

  • Consider graphic novels (visual appeal)

“My child only wants to read the SAME book!”

This is normal and valuable!

โœ… Re-reading builds fluency
โœ… Comfort reads are valid
โœ… Familiarity = confidence

What to do:

  • Honor the re-read (let them enjoy it!)

  • Offer similar books: “You love that one! Want to try another book about [same topic]?”

  • Find series: “There are 20 more books about this character!”

“The books I found didn’t work!”

Possible reasons:

  • Level was too hard or too easy

  • Topic wasn’t quite right (wanted dinosaurs, you got prehistoric mammals)

  • Book style didn’t match (wanted funny, got serious)

What to try:

  • Adjust level up or down

  • Get MORE specific (not just “animals” but “animal rescue stories”)

  • Try different format (fiction โ†’ non-fiction, or vice versa)

  • Ask your child: “What didn’t you like? What would make it better?”

๐ŸŒธ FINAL TIPS

Remember:

โœ… Quality matters less than motivation. A “silly” book that they love beats a “classic” they hate.

โœ… Graphic novels count. So do comics. So does non-fiction. All reading builds skills!

โœ… It’s okay to abandon books. Not every book is for every child. Keep trying!

โœ… Interests change. What works today might not work in 3 months. Stay curious!

โœ… Let them love what they love. Even if it’s not what you’d choose.

Your goal: Find books that make your child WANT to read.

When you do: Everything else (skills, fluency, comprehension) follows naturally.

Keep matching. Keep observing. Keep experimenting.

You’re doing great! ๐Ÿ’š
