Language Reframe Quick-Reference Card

Transform Your Reading Responses in the Moment

For Parents | Words That Bloom

๐ŸŽฏ HOW TO USE THIS CARD

Print this card and keep it:

  • Next to your reading chair

  • In your child’s book basket

  • On the fridge

  • In your bag for reading on-the-go

When your child struggles, glance down and choose ONE reframe.

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to try ONE new response.

๐Ÿ’ฌ THE INSTANT REFRAME CHART

When Your Child Gets Stuck on a Word

Instead of…

Try…

“You should know this!”

“You’re still figuring it out!”

“We’ve done this!”

“Let’s try a new way together.”

“Focus!”

“What could you try here?”

“Stop guessing!”

“Let’s look for clues.”

“That’s wrong.”

“Good try! Let’s look closer.”

When Your Child Makes the Same Mistake Again

Instead of…

Try…

“Why can’t you remember?”

“This is a tricky one. What helps you remember?”

“We practiced this yesterday!”

“Hmm, this word is being sneaky today!”

“You knew this 5 minutes ago!”

“Your brain needs a little reminder. Let’s look together.”

When Your Child Seems to Give Up

Instead of…

Try…

“Don’t quit!”

“This is challenging. What would make it easier?”

“You’re not even trying!”

“It looks like you need a break. Let’s wiggle!”

“Just do it!”

“I can see this is hard. Let’s try a different book.”

When You Feel Frustrated

Instead of…

Try…

Sighing audibly

Take 3 deep breaths silently first

“This shouldn’t be this hard!”

“All readers struggle. This is normal.”

“What’s wrong with you?”

“What’s hard about this? Let’s figure it out.”

๐ŸŒŸ THE POWER WORDS

Use these words oftenโ€”they transform mindset:

โœ… “Yet” – “You can’t read this word… yet!”
โœ… “Still” – “You’re still learning this sound.”
โœ… “Strategy” – “What strategy could help here?”
โœ… “Notice” – “What do you notice about this word?”
โœ… “Try” – “What could we try?”
โœ… “Wonder” – “I wonder why that’s tricky?”
โœ… “Clue” – “Let’s look for clues.”
โœ… “Brave” – “That was a brave guess!”

โŒ THE WORDS TO AVOID

These words trigger shame and shutdown:

โŒ “Should” – “You should know this!”
โŒ “Why” – “Why did you say that?”
โŒ “Wrong” – “That’s wrong.”
โŒ “Always” – “You always forget this!”
โŒ “Never” – “You never remember!”
โŒ “Just” – “Just read it!”
โŒ “Easy” – “This is easy!”

๐ŸŽฏ THE 3-STEP RESPONSE FORMULA

When your child struggles, use this simple 3-step formula:

STEP 1: PAUSE

  • Count to 5 silently

  • Let them try to self-correct

  • Take a breath

STEP 2: NAME WHAT YOU SEE (no judgment)

  • “I see you’re stuck on this word.”

  • “I notice you’re working hard on this.”

  • “It looks like this word is tricky.”

STEP 3: INVITE PROBLEM-SOLVING

  • “What could help?”

  • “What do you notice?”

  • “What could we try?”

๐Ÿ’š PROCESS PRAISE STARTERS

Keep these handy to celebrate effort and strategies:

โœ… “I loved how you…”

  • …sounded out that word

  • …used the picture to help

  • …didn’t give up

  • …went back and reread

โœ… “I noticed you…”

  • …caught your own mistake

  • …tried different strategies

  • …stuck with it even though it was hard

  • …asked for help when you needed it

โœ… “I saw you…”

  • …thinking about that word

  • …looking closely at the letters

  • …using what you know

  • …being patient with yourself

๐Ÿšจ EMERGENCY PHRASES

When things are getting tense, use these to reset:

To buy yourself time:

  • “Hmm, let me think about this for a second.”

  • “That’s an interesting challenge. Let’s pause.”

  • “I need to take a breath. Let’s both take one.”

To acknowledge struggle:

  • “This is hard. Hard is okay.”

  • “All readers struggle. You’re doing great.”

  • “I can see you’re working so hard on this.”

To take a break:

  • “Let’s take a wiggle break!”

  • “Want to stand up and shake it out?”

  • “Let’s get a drink and come back to this.”

To switch gears:

  • “Let’s try a different book.”

  • “How about I read this page, you read the next?”

  • “Let’s stop here and come back later.”

๐Ÿ“‹ THE QUICK MENTAL CHECKLIST

Before you respond to struggle, ask yourself:

โ˜ Have I taken a breath?
โ˜ Is my face relaxed? (Children read your face!)
โ˜ Am I about to use “should” or “why”?
โ˜ Can I reframe this as curiosity instead of criticism?
โ˜ Can I wait 5 seconds before speaking?

๐ŸŒธ REMEMBER

Your calm, curious response is MORE IMPORTANT than:

  • Getting the word right immediately

  • Finishing the book today

  • Reading perfectly

  • “Keeping up” with other children

Every time you choose a growth-mindset response, you’re:

  • Building your child’s resilience

  • Teaching them that struggle is normal

  • Showing them how to problem-solve

  • Strengthening your relationship

  • Creating a lifelong reader

You’re doing important work. One reframe at a time. ๐Ÿ’š
