BUILDING INDEPENDENCE: QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
From “My Turn” to “Your Turn”
π― THE CORE PRINCIPLE
Independence isn’t taughtβit’s GROWN through:
- Just-enough support (scaffolding)
- Process praise (not perfection)
- Choice (not pressure)
- Catch & release (when stuck)
πͺ SCAFFOLDING LADDER (START LOW!)
1. WAIT TIME – Count to 5-7 (try this FIRST!) 2. FINGER TRACK – Slide under word 3. ASK QUESTIONS – “What’s the first sound?” 4. FIRST SOUND – Give beginning sound 5. PICTURE CUE – Point to illustration 6. CHUNKING – Break into parts 7. BLEND HELP – Say sounds together 8. TELL THEM – Give word, then release back
Rule: Start at Level 1. Move up ONLY if needed.
π¬ PROCESS PRAISE (NOT PERFECTION!)
Instead of: β “Perfect!” / “You’re so smart!” / “Good job.”
Try: β “You worked so hard!” β “Great strategy!” β “You didn’t give up!” β “You figured it out yourself!” β “You caught that mistake!”
Six Categories:
- Effort – “You tried so hard!”
- Strategy – “You used the picture!”
- Persistence – “You kept going!”
- Self-Correction – “You fixed that!”
- Independence – “You did it alone!”
- Courage – “Brave try!”
π― GIVING CHOICES (BUILDS OWNERSHIP)
Offer choices in 5 areas:
π Book: “Which one tonight?” π Pages: “Your turn or mine?” π£οΈ Voices: “Want to do silly voices?” β° Timing: “One chapter or two?” ποΈ Level: “Easy book or challenge?”
Remember: Choice = engagement. Pressure = shutdown.
π£ CATCH & RELEASE (3 STEPS)
When truly stuck:
1. CATCH (5 seconds) Give word quickly “That’s ‘stream'”
2. RELEASE (immediately) Hand back to them “Now read the sentence”
3. KEEP MOVING Don’t dwell on it Continue story!
β±οΈ THE 5-SECOND PAUSE
Your biggest challenge: WAIT before helping!
When they pause:
- Take a breath
- Count: 1…2…3…4…5…6…7
- Wait a bit MORE
- THEN decide if they need help
Most of the time? They’ll figure it out!
π SIGNS OF GROWING INDEPENDENCE
Watch for these wins: β Tries before asking for help β Uses strategies independently β Self-corrects mistakes β Less frustration with hard words β Asks for help appropriately β Willing to try new/harder books β Reads pages independently β Shows pride after challenges β Says “I can do it!” β Doesn’t wait for correction
β οΈ AVOID THESE PITFALLS
β Jumping in too fast (robs them of “aha!”) β Stopping at every error (kills flow) β Taking over when they struggle β Only praising perfection β No choices offered β Forcing harder books β Comparing to other kids
π― THREE QUICK ACTIVITIES
1. “I Read, You Read” Trade off pages/paragraphs Gives mental breaks Maintains engagement
2. “5-Second Pause” Challenge for YOU Count to 5 before helping They’ll often solve it!
3. “Ask, Don’t Tell” Instead of giving word Ask scaffolding question “What’s the first sound?”
π BOOK SELECTION: THE “JUST RIGHT” ZONE
Five Finger Test: Have child read one page Each unknown word = one finger
- 0-1 fingers: Too easy (but great for fluency!)
- 2-3 fingers: JUST RIGHT (independent level)
- 4-5 fingers: Too hard (save for read-alouds)
Perfect books for building independence:
- BOB Books
- Elephant & Piggie series
- I Can Read Level 1-2
- Frog and Toad series
- Henry and Mudge series
β SESSION CHECKLIST
After each reading:
β Did I wait 5 seconds before helping? β Did I start with LOW scaffold level? β Did I praise PROCESS not perfection? β Did I offer at least ONE choice? β Did I use “catch & release” when needed? β Did it feel joyful, not pressured?
3+ checks = Success!
π WHEN THINGS GET TRICKY
They won’t even try: β Start with VERY easy books β Practice 5-second pause β Praise every attempt
Too frustrated with mistakes: β Talk about mistakes being part of learning β Use easier books temporarily β Praise struggle, not just success
Only wants easy books: β That’s okay! Rereading builds fluency β Make easy books more challenging (expression, speed) β Don’t force harder books
I jumped in too fast: β Apologize: “Oops, YOU were reading!” β Let them continue β Try again tomorrow

π― THE AUTONOMY FORMULA
AUTONOMY (choice) + COMPETENCE (appropriate challenge) + CONNECTION (doing it together)
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION (reading for joy!)
πΈ YOUR DAILY MANTRA
“I will wait before helping. I will praise their effort. I will offer choices. I will trust them. They are more capable than I think.”
π WEEKLY FOCUS
Pick ONE area to focus on each week:
Week 1: Practice 5-second pause Week 2: Use lower scaffold levels Week 3: Give more specific praise Week 4: Offer more choices Week 5: Perfect “catch & release” Week 6: Increase independent reading time
