Pacing Practice Script

A simple toolkit to help you bring any picture book to life — one read at a time.

Before You Begin

Reading aloud to your child is one of the most powerful things you can do — not because you need to be perfect, but because your voice, presence, and enthusiasm are what make stories come alive.

This practice script gives you a few simple tools to experiment with pacing, expression, and voice. Think of it less like a performance checklist and more like a playful invitation: try one thing, notice what your child responds to, and build from there.

Use these mark-up symbols directly in any picture book — pencil them lightly in the margins — and return to the rubric and confidence ladder after your read to celebrate what's growing.

Use on Any Picture Book

Lightly pencil these into the margins of any book before you read. They're gentle reminders, not rules.

▶▶
Speed up For excitement or action
Pause For effect or suspense
Slow down For emotion or tenderness
💬
Character voice Change pitch or tone for dialogue
Add expression Use your face or a gesture
Example line

▶▶ "The dragon lifted his wings and roared! ✋ 💬 'Who dares enter my cave?' "

▶▶ = build speed into the roar  ·  ✋ = pause before the question  ·  💬 = deepen your voice for the dragon

After-Read Rubric

Confidence Ladder

Every reader starts somewhere. Find where you are today — and celebrate each step forward.

Beginner
Reading flat, focusing on words

You're doing the most important thing: showing up and reading together.

→ Try this: add one pause + one new character voice

Growing
Using 2–3 voices, basic pacing

You're building a real repertoire — your child is noticing the difference.

→ Try this: add facial expressions to match the emotion

Confident
Expressive rhythm, natural flow

Reading feels less like a task and more like storytelling together.

→ Try this: record yourself and listen back

Expert
Full character range + gestures

You've become a storyteller. This joy is contagious — your child feels it.

→ Try this: model for others or share a short video
