BONUS ACTIVITY: One-Week Reading Challenge
Purpose: Gamify tracking and build momentum
Time Required: One week
What You’ll Need:
- Your tracking system
- Small rewards (optional)
Instructions:
Set a Fun Weekly Challenge Together:
Let your child choose ONE of these challenges for the week:
🌟 Consistency Challenge: Read at least 3 minutes every day for 7 days
📚 Variety Challenge: Read 3 different types of books this week (fiction, nonfiction, comic, poem, etc.)
🎯 Strategy Challenge: Use a specific reading strategy (sounding out, rereading, picture clues) at least 5 times this week
💪 Stamina Challenge: Read 2 minutes longer than usual each session
🗣️ Sharing Challenge: Tell someone about your book 3 times this week
Track It:
Use stickers, checkmarks, or drawings to track progress toward the challenge.
Celebrate at Week’s End:
Whether they met the challenge or not, celebrate the attempt:
“You tried the consistency challenge and read 5 out of 7 days. That’s way more than last week!”
Optional Small Reward:
If your family uses incentives:
- Extra screen time
- Special snack
- Bookstore trip
- Stay up 15 minutes late
- Pick the weekend activity
Important: The reward should be for effort, not just success. If they tried hard but didn’t meet the challenge, still celebrate.
Why This Matters: Challenges add excitement to tracking. They transform “I have to read” into “I’m going for a goal!”
